Benefits of Using Natural Gas in the Home Natural gas is a highly efficient form of energy. As the cleanest burning fossil fuel out there in today’s market, it is better for the environment. So what does this mean? This means that by choosing natural gas for the home people can save money and help reduce their carbon footprint on the planet. Natural gas is the least expensive way to heat a home. It also provides peace of mind in knowing that it is a reliable fuel that comes mostly from North America. This makes it possible for the United States to be more self-sufficient and also help its neighbors to the north and south to use more ecologically friendly types of energy. Natural gas is always there when people need it, with no worries that their fuel is running low and needs to be refilled. It burns without an odor, soot or ash or concerns about tank leaks and spills. Natural gas can fuel many of a home's amenities, such as heaters, pool heaters, cooking stoves and ovens, barbecues, hot water heaters, clothes dryers, generators and fireplaces, to name a few. This energy source is sought after most often by home buyers, so it can increase the value of a house or condominium. Natural gas also has a very limited flammability range, meaning it is safer to use. It takes a precise combination of air and natural gas before it can burn. Since natural gas is lighter than air, it will safely rise and disperse into the air if allowed to vent freely. To utilize natural gas in a home, consider implanting a gas clothes dryer. Gas dryers are more powerful than most electric dryers, reducing cycle time and costs. They are also extremely safe, easy to operate and environmentally friendly. Use natural gas for cooking needs. Natural gas cooking is convenient, costs less and is very efficient. It provides instant clean and visible heat with precision control. Consumers can also use natural gas in the form of propane to cook their food outside on their barbecue grill. It is a smart heating solution. Natural gas systems provide warmth and comfort in the home and consumers have the flexibility to heat the whole house or just one room. Natural gas hot water systems provide hot water quickly to consumers’ faucets. Consumers can also use natural gas to heat their pool or spa. There are also many incentives and rebates available for homeowners that replace electrial appliances with some oil and gas powered products. Consumers and potential consumers should check with their local state and government agencies to find out more about these. New Subsea Processing Revolutionizes Oil and Gas Industry The number of deep-sea oil and gas field discoveries is growing. The ability to separate oil, water and gas on-site has become an important step in production. Rather than transporting everything that comes out of the ground to a site for separation, new methods of deep-water processing have emerged that make it faster, cleaner and less expensive. Floating or fixed platforms have reduced some time and cost factors, but bad weather and frigid surface temperatures have hampered some of these advancements, making it impossible to produce oil and gas during certain times of the year. Subsea separation has had an even more dramatic effect, since much of that work can be done below the surface, away from hazardous conditions. Underwater Advancements Subsea processing has been around since the 1970’s, but oil and gas companies have been slow to embrace the concept while concentrating on the present, not the future. Over the past nine years, with technology moving forward, it has become more widely accepted. It is no longer a few research and exploration groups spurring advancements, but all hands in the industry moving toward new, more efficient production methods. New MethodsIs Oil or Gas Better to Heat One’s Home When choosing which option to heat one’s home there are many choices, but two of the most popular options are oil and gas. While each of these has its own advantages and disadvantages, choosing which one is right for one’s home may take a lot of research. Here is a look at the benefits of each one and how they can make a household be more cost and energy efficient. Natural gas or propane is very popular. It is the one source that is used throughout most homes in the Unites States, but is also widely used in Europe as well. The reason for its popularity is its convenience for costumers. Generally all they have to do is ensure that their bill is paid on time and they have a steady supply of it into their home, thus having an unlimited supply of heat. This goes through pipelines and can also be transported through the use of ships, as well as tanker trucks. This form is usually made up of methane, but other gases can be found at times. This particular heating option can be easily used and as long as one keeps their heating equipment updated and ensures that it is properly working, this can be a fairly inexpensive and convenient way to keep one’s home heated throughout the cooler months. Heating oil is also very popular in homes throughout the United States, particularly in the Northeast, and now ranks in at second for the most used source of heat. It is known as a more sophisticated form of heating one’s home and is very popular, because it is not as easy to ignite as other forms of heat, thus making it a popular choice in homes, especially in those which have young children. Many older homes have this as their primary heat source and have proven to be very long-lasting, durable sources of heat. While not as commonly used as the natural gas or propane, it is still used in many homes and can thoroughly heat a house when needed. When choosing the right one for heating the home, one should consider each option carefully and look at the type of equipment they already have in their home. If the equipment is broken or worn, it may be wise to convert to a more efficient means of heating one’s home because, although it may cost a bit more up front, it can save money in the future over time. Different types of subsea separation of oil, gas, water and sand have come to light. These newer methods include gravity, centrifugal force, cyclones and coalescers. Since deep-sea oil and gas fields are considered the last, best hope for energy resources, the ability to do it more efficiently has become more important than ever. The latest technology features centrifugal force. Rotary compressors separate oil and gas through high-speed spinning, causing liquid, gas and solids to come apart from each other. This is done at the well, eliminating the problem of solids blocking or corrupting a pipeline. Water can be disposed of in a more environmentally-friendly method. Transport of gas and oil to separate facilities after extraction is also more cost efficient. Technology In Use The first full subsea separation, boosting and injection production began in the North Sea in 2007, increasing the production life of the field by more than 15 years. Just 2 years later, the first gas-liquid subsea separation with boosting took place off the coast of Brazil. The future looks bright, with a gas-liquid subsea separation project coming online off the African coast in 2011. Another new development, one of the deepest underwater excavations to date, is moving forward in the Gulf of Mexico. How Do Oil Fields Form? Oil and gas are essential to modern life. They are used as fuel and as raw ingredients for the chemical industry. Until recently, no one knew where they came from or where to find them. They are not miraculous or random resources, and extracting them has become more predictable and profitable with each passing year. Petroleum companies have invested a great deal in researching the formation of oil fields. In addition, the geological surveys of many countries have dedicated financial and academic resources to the same goals. Together they have discovered some amazing things. Oil is the putrefied remains of buried micro-organisms, mostly algae. This has become evident after years of research. Future oil fields can be seen forming in lakes and on the ocean floor. Dead algae accumulate on the bottom, and are then covered by layers of sediment. Additional layers of sediment build up and push the algae deeper into the earth. The temperature rises as the rock layers deepen, and the algae begins to cook. If it is allowed to cook long enough at the right temperature it turns into petroleum, but oil is very seldom found where it was formed. Oil and gas move easily through permeable rock. Since most sedimentary rock is permeable, deposits of petroleum can move great distances. When they encounter impermeable rock they stop moving and accumulate. Finding these pockets of petroleum is the key to oil exploration. One common place to find petroleum deposits is under a salt dome. Salt moves upward through the earth, as it is less dense than the rock above it. It tends to form dome-shaped structures, and it is under these impermeable salt domes that deposits of petroleum and gas are found. Any substantial accumulation of sedimentary rock may harbor deposits of petroleum. That is why we find so much of it in, for instance, the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf has multiple layers of sediment many miles thick. As the layers sunk, the oil cooked on the way down. Then it trickled upward until it was trapped under impermeable layers. In the Gulf these are usually salt domes. This is an excellent example of a source of petroleum that continues to make new oil as we remove the old. Man is using the old oil at a much faster rate than nature can produce new oil. Fortunately, there is every reason to believe that there is much more oil in the ground than we have yet discovered. Changing oil prices have resulted in even more vigorous exploration. Exploration In Oil and Gas Advances In the early days of oil and gas exploration, scientists would scam the Earth’s surface, waiting for natural gas deposits to rise to the top. After finding an active presence, they dug into the earth below until the source was reached. Geologic Clues Over time, they found similar geological clues in different surface areas that all contained natural resources below the surface. By looking for specific rock types on the surface, they were likely to find natural gas deposits below. In Pennsylvania, for example, when prospectors were looking for salt to mine, oil and gas deposits were often discovered in the same areas. Although some of the salt deposits were contaminated and ruined by gas and oil, the comparative presence of certain types of rock formations were a startling clue: if one type of rock is here, salt, oil or gas are sure to be here as well. Rock Formations They began searching for anticlinal formations, which are areas where the earth has collapsed upon itself, creating a pocket of natural gas. Certain types of rocks and croppings signaled the presence of natural gas and prompted testing to see what was below. Seismic Waves Scientific advancements soon turned to more complicated methods of discovering what lies below the ground surface. One of these was monitoring seismic waves. When the areas deep beneath the Earth’s crust are stimulated, seismic waves reflect back to the surface in different patterns. Depending on what they are moving through or reflecting from, waves vary in size and frequency. The waves can be detected and studied from the surface to monitor underground activity. Although seismic wave technology was discovered in the 1850s, it was not used for oil and gas exploration until the 1920s. These days, scientists create their own artificial waves on the surface, tracking seismic activity underground. When the waves behave in a certain manner, it signals natural gas and petroleum deposits. Geological Surveys Maps and surveys of the area both above and below the ground give geologists and geophysicists a better idea of what types of natural gas and oil deposits may be far below the Earth’s surface. Scientists are now using magnetism and gravity to search for chris jent oil and gas deposits as well. A device called a magnetometer measures the movement and changes in plates and formations below the Earth’s surface. Gravitational fields are also monitored by special equipment that gives explorers and researchers a better idea of where natural energy resources are located. Oil and Gas Companies Keep a Hand on the Present and an Eye On the Future Oil and gas play pivotal rolls in modern life. Both industries support thousands of employees, thereby supporting thousands of families; not to mention these two natural resources are generally the fuel of choice for thousands of consumers. Advancements in technology have enabled fuel companies to explore unheard of depths in search of these fuels, and this technology has resulted in newer and less invasive ways of extracting the precious commodities from the earth. This vital balance of technology helps keep homes warm and economies moving. While gas and oil are both a source of heat, oil itself is refined into a variety of products, many of which actually move things around the globe. By investing millions of dollars into research, oil and gas companies have assured a future for their business. Faced with depleting supplies in existing fields, the arrival of newer and better ways to drill has produced fantastic results. Much like the automobile industry, the energy industry supports thousands of other types of industries. This support is not just through the final product. These companies purchase large amounts of raw materials and a variety of goods and services from a many other companies; therefore the success of oil and gas companies is extremely important to the health and well-being of other companies and industries. This translates into one business unit supporting a very large and ever-expanding circle of employees and their families. The continued success of fuel companies is contingent upon finding new deposits of natural resources. Advancements in areas like undersea exploration and new ways to refine oil have produced the ability to pull oil and gas out places that were never dreamed of generations ago. Those same advancements have also allowed these companies to utilize less invasive methods of achieving the removal process. From computers to high-pressure robotics, every discovery can be can be tailored to make the fuel companies more efficient, provided these companies invest the money into research. They have answered the call and continue to invent new ways to reach unheard of reserves every single year. Only through a dedicated marriage of technological advancements and determination is the oil and gas industry able to survive decade after decade. Providing inexpensive fuels for the worlds furnaces and cars is more important than ever, but also keeping employees and their families secure is a top priority. These companies will continue success today, but always have an eye opened to the future. Their success depends on anticipating and implementing changes. Natural Gas Extraction Becoming More Efficient Research and development programs of oil and gas companies continue to seek natural gas deposits buried deep within the earth. While technology to determine the amount of potential energy fuel sources has improved over the years, it is still not an exact science. Until drillers actually reach the natural gas deposits, the exact quality and quantity is unknown. The process of drilling depends on a variety of factors, including the company’s budget, the makeup of the Earth’s subsurface materials to be drilled through and the depth and possible size of the source. The deposit is reached by drilling a well. Special types of drilling equipment are used to produce maximum efficiency in the drilling process. Before a company begins drilling for natural gas, it must have the proper permission and permits for both drilling and providing pipelines to remove the gas from the well head out of the area. Drilling is an expensive process that is only done in areas with the most potential for success. If the hole produced by the drilling team strikes a deposit of natural gas, it is considered a “development well” or a “productive well.” If the deposit does not have enough potential for natural gas production, it is termed a “dry well.” To remove the natural gas from a well, the drilling area must be strengthened before natural resources can be lifted. The deeper a hole goes, the smaller it becomes at the bottom. Sometimes other agents must be introduced into the well, such as acid, to dissolve some rock formations and increase the size towards the bottom. The well hole must be large enough to handle pipes, called casing, inserted into the deposit. Without the casing, the gas cannot be removed. Casing also provides stability to the hole, preventing collapse from underneath or the eruption of fluids due to pressure and temperature changes. Natural gas is not in the same state underground as it is when consumers use it. At first discovery, it is mixed in with other components, such as water, oil and other gases and fluids. The most efficient way to extract it now is to separate it before bringing it to the surface. Otherwise, the pipes cannot handle the substance traveling through them. This creates burst pipes, clogs and injuries. In wells with the most pure form of natural gas, once the right type of casing and pipes are set up, the gas will naturally rise to the top. Gas is lighter than air. In deposits with oil and water mixed in, the lifting process becomes more complicated and requires more sophisticated equipment for separation. In some cases, an additional well must be drilled nearby to act as a drain so the gas and liquids will separate from each other. The methods of extracting natural resources from the earth have improved over the years. With continued research and experimentation, the process is becoming more efficient and cost effective every day. Efficiency Is Key In The Natural Gas Industry Natural gas is a fossil fuel which is categorized as the remains of animals, plants and microorganisms that have lived millions of years ago and have been compressed under the earth at a very high pressure for all of that time. The three most common fossil fuels are coal, oil and gas, but they are quite different in molecular structure. There is often a lot of confusion and some misconceptions when it comes to the word "gas" itself. For instance, the gas we use to light the outdoor barbecue pit is actually propane, which is a component of natural gas and therefore not gas itself. Natural gas is considered one of the most important sources of the earth's energy supply because it is safe, clean and one of the most useful. It is odorless, colorless and combustible, which is very important because when it burns it gives off a great deal of energy. It is held in high regard because, unlike some other fuels, it is clean burning and gives off much lower levels of toxic byproducts into the atmosphere. Without realizing it, most homes use a great amount of energy every day, so having a cheap source of readily available energy is essential. One of the most well-known and common uses for natural gas is residential home cooking and heating. It is historically cheaper than electricity as a source of energy and provides many benefits to the residential consumer. Newer natural gas ranges offer much better control over temperature and ignition and cost half as much to maintain as an electric stove. Homes heated with natural gas not only save by not using electricity, but also benefit from the more even displacement of heat from a natural gas appliance because they can achieve efficiencies of more than 90 percent. Due to its efficiency, natural gas also has large commercial applications that are similar to residential ones. It is primarily used in this sector for heating water, plus cooling and general heating of large government buildings, hospitals, schools, hotels and restaurants where there are huge energy demands. Natural gas also has large industrial applications, such as food processing, glass melting, fueling industrial boilers and for waste treatment and incineration. Natural gas is also commonly used by many industrial plants as a feedstock for the manufacture of a vast number of products and chemicals including everyday plastics. There are also a number of new uses and applications that are appearing every day for natural gas, like its use as a fuel for transportation. Today, natural gas is used primarily in vehicles that travel a lot of miles, such as airport shuttles and school buses, but because of its low cost and minimal impact to the environment it presents a great opportunity to reduce the carbon imprint of a whole industry. The Advantages of Using Oil and Gas As Heating Sources Oil is one of the main heating sources used in most homes, especially in the northeastern portion of the United States. Because it is categorized as a clean fuel, it is the fuel of choice. When it comes to environmental issues, heating oil is biodegradable and non-toxic. It is very safe to usebecause of its liquid form. Oil burners tend to last 20 or 30 years. The residential oil storage tanks normally last around 20 years or longer. Heating a home that has been cold for a long period of time is no problem because oil produces heat rather quickly. For homes located in the colder parts of the United States, the ability to heat homes quickly is definitely appreciated by consumers. Oil burners are clean and mostly quiet while operating. They do not give off any type of fumes or smoke during the heating process. The ductwork associated with oil heaters can be tailored to any style of home and that is a plus. Another popular form of heating is natural gas. Gas heaters have been rated as one of the most efficient sources of heating. Due to the versatility of gas, it has a wide range of uses. There are gas hot water heaters along with gas ranges and dryers. Gas is also considered to be a clean fuel. If gas is being used as a heating fuel, the need for a chimney does not exist. In recent years, most apartment complexes have started to offer gas fireplaces as an amenity. Gas appliances cost less to operate. Statistics show that a gas clothes dryer has the ability to dry twice as many clothes for less money in comparison to using an electric clothes dryer. This is an important factor for large families. When considering purchasing a home, gas appliances would be the most economical way to go. There are numerous types of portable gas heaters out on the market also. When living in an area that is prone to severe storms, having a gas heater will come in handy. If the electricity goes out, heat will still be available. When combining the advantages of both oil and gas for heating, they are both reliable sources. Despite the numerous advancements already made in the industry, researchers are continuing to coming up with ways to make oil and gas more efficient and user-friendly. Technology has played an important role in the introduction of oil and gas as primary heating sources. Gone are the days of burning coal or going outside to chop wood for the wood burning stove. Oil Drilling Innovations Make Advancements Possible Over the last 20 years a number of notable innovations have taken place that allow for the exploration and development of oil and gas. Especially with natural gas, improvements in technology and the methods for searching for reserves have become more advanced. Combine this with the fact that oil prices are still at high levels and the incentive is there to do what is necessary to find the various deep water reserves around the world. To do this, a number of innovative tools are being used to safely search and extract the natural gas. Three-Dimensional Imaging This is used throughout the industry to find the various deep water natural gas reserves that are far below the seabed. Explorers will scan the seabed using seismic technology to develop three-dimensional images of the basin. This aids engineers by helping them to focus their efforts on those areas that have the highest probability of seeing proven reserves. This is one of the reasons there have been several huge deep water discoveries over the last several years. Drilling Advancements in the development of drill bits used in deep water exploration and the techniques to extract the natural gas have improved dramatically. This has allowed engineers to effectively extract the natural gas from miles away with precision accuracy. A good example of this can be seen with the different techniques that have evolved, such as horizontal drilling techniques used in the Hoover Diana Field. Operations are taking place offsite to maneuver toward the fields rather than attempting penetration from directly above the area. Monitoring When the natural gas is extracted, it must be accomplished in the most efficient and environmentally-friendly way possible. New innovations, such as deep sea intelligent software, makes this possible. This monitoring mechanism analyzes the overall amount of material being extracted so that engineers can limit the environmental impact while extracting the natural resource. chris jent of triple diamond energy looks down on scams Conclusion Clearly there have been a number of different innovations that have taken place in the area of deep water natural gas drilling over the last 20 year. Some of the most notable would include three-dimensional imaging, improved drill bits, techniques and monitoring. All of these different elements have helped provide an effective way to safely reach those reserves that are miles below the seabed. It is these forward steps that have helped revolutionize an industry that is always seeking better ways to find and extract proven energy reserves.
